 What is a Mentor?
Nature of a mentoring relationship
Origin of word – The Odyssey Odysseus hires a family friend, Mentor, (which means wise and sensitive) to teach his son, Telemachus to be” kingship skills”
Definition – an adult who, along with parents, provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out the strengths they possess. A mentor is a wise and faithful adviser or teacher; one who is firm in keeping promises or in fulfilling duties.

Mentor Responsibilities
- Make a minimum eight-month commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with a teenager;
- Attend mentor orientation and training sessions before meeting mentee;
- Attend ongoing mentor training and support sessions;
- Meet with mentee on a regular basis to establish working relationship and to support mentee in future goals;
- Assist mentee in solving problems that interfere with mentee’s success; and
- Keep time logs and other information as requested by mentor coordinator.

If you have the following qualifications, you could positively change the life of our youth as well as your own:
- Sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve personal goals;
- Ability to communicate with teenagers openly and non-judgmentally;
- Strong listening skills;
- Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect;
- Interest in needs and concerns of persons with internal and external barriers;
- Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives; and
- Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds.
